With Andrew Loomis's books costing $150.00, your
labour of altruism is truly remarkable. Even Walter-Foster sells two 32pg versions of Faces, and Figures, selling for $8.95 each. I for one didn't even know about Andrew Loomis until I happened upon your site. You have brought his love, his unique mastery of art to me in a way I would never would have known were it not for your efforts. Thank-you.

Awesome of you to put up the loomis PDF's... that's some bloody good karma flooding your way. I like your dedication to animation. Few people I think recognize the steepness of that hill, it's insane really. I am rededicating myself back to the basics of animation after somehow having ended up in visual effects many years after film school. I went to film school to become an animator of characters, and now find myself in yet another season of scifi work doing set extensions, blowing things up, etc. but no characters :(
Keep fighting onward, it's worth it. The animation mentor stuff sounds great, I like that people from all over the world can do it. Good for them. Physical film schools are just not what so many people need, or don't need at the time, especially considering the cost.
Thanks for the inspiration...

Hello ! Thanks so much for hosting these books ! I have been looking for a way to get started in art, and these books are often cited as the best available. I actually saw a used, run down Loomis book once (Drawing the Head and Hands), but decided to wait - and when I went back to the used bookshop it was gone ! :-( Since then I've been hunting high and low.... Thanks a lot !

P.S. Do you know of any other good online resources for artists ? My focus is on digital art at the moment....

Thanks for continuing to host these PDF files. While I have all these books -- either in original or photocopy -- it took a lot of searching and a good chunk of money to put them on my shelves. It's a crime that they are no longer in print, as I consider them essential books for anyone wanting to learn to draw or paint. I've pointed many of my students to these books, and those who take the time to study them will be better artists for it. Your posting of the books allows me to use them in my class more effectively, as now all my students have access to them without having to spend a fortune on eBay or with used book dealers (as I did!).

Thank you so much for making this available. I can't draw much more than stick figures, certainly can't justify enormous amounts of money because I don't want to draw seriously - just for myself. And especially because these are out of print and very hard to come by - buying one from ebay would be taking it from a student who needs it and needs to improve for his work. Anyway thank you so much for this hassle free way to get them. I wish they would come back in print but for now this will have to do. Hopefully I will be back in a year able to draw more ;)

thank you for making these available.

I wish there was some way to bully the Loomis estate to reprint these. Collectors are snapping up all the hardbound copies and the last editions in paperback are falling apart from over use.

I have always used Loomis as instructional text, as they are much better than Byrne Hogarth's works, which while instructional is so artificial.

Dear Administrator.
I am a Japanese Illustrator.
My nickname is mogurin.
I studied illustration by Andrew Loomis's books when I was young, which was tlanslated into Japanese, and was very influenced .
I read "Creative Illustration" and" Drawing the Head& Hands" &
"Figure drawing for all it'worth".
These three books were tlanslated into Japanese by Maar Sha Co., Ltd. in Japan.
But when I skimed pdf now, some illustration were omitted in Japanese books, that surprised me.
And what's more,I found another Andrew Loomis's book,
"Fun With A Pencil","Successful Drawing","The Eye Of The Painter"!
In Japan ,we can get only" Drawing The Head & Hands" & "igure Drawing For All It's Worth".
Regrettably" Creative Illustration" is out of print in Japan, although it is a great book.
So ,thank you very much.I am grateful for you.
If you permit me to translate into Japanese, I would like to
put into our language little by little in my mixi homepage.

Ryan,
Thanks so much for the Loomis downloads. I have a couple in hard copies, but as you know they're gone perhaps forever except monstrously jacked up prices on what's available, all thanks, as I understand, to the greed of his kids squabbling over his estate. And as far as I'm concerned he's a god and true descendant of Howard Pyle. No one is teaching this anymore. You're performing a good service. Carry on, Art Soldier!
FYI I bought The Animator's Survival kit on Amazon through your site so you might let them know you're an asset. I'll also check out Animation Mentor on your say so.

LOOMIS looms large in the lexicon of artists, illustrators, comicbook artists in his invaluable ability to decifer the enigma of the human form and its' interaction with space and communicate it in book form for those who have the desire to learn and you my friend have enabled that to continue forward into the new digital order. I'm sure he thanks you for it...all of us certainly do!

Thank you very much for making these available. I agree that there is no reason why these books should be out of print. They are important works of a master. The Walter Foster company, is, I believe, chopping up some of these works and repackaging them, this is sacrilège. These works stand on their own. I hope somehow they will be reprinted.

Comment from: Jaye [Visitor] · http://www.poprawks.com
Ryan,

Thanks so very much for making these books available. I "discovered" Andrew Loomis when I was a little girl, but was limited to just savoring them in the library and occasionally photocopying the few pages I could afford to then, because they were treated as reference books and couldn't be checked out. In years since, I discovered other people wanted his books as much as I did, and could never find affordable copies!

I wrote Walter Foster publications a letter today, asking them to consider re-releasing Mr. Loomis' work in its entirety, instead of the excerpts they've released under different titles. (I encourage others to do so, via their publishing/sales department). Research is showing that Loomis' family ultimately still controls the rights and wants nothing to do with it, other than leaving it for educational copying. I'm not sure if that's true, since Walter Foster is publishing something from the books. But at least we have these to be able to print out and study.

Thank you for this treasure you've provided for artists and budding artists everywhere, the ease of download and the donation of bandwidth as well. It's awesome that you've done this... a real public service.

May years of happiness and success come to you in your animation ninja quest. Hope to see some of your works in the near future!

Good news to all... LOOMIS BOOKS TO BE RE-RELEASED

On Ken Steacy Publishing's site, I just discovered... he was going to be re-releasing at least 4 of Loomis's books. Ken Steacy Publishing is now partnering up with a larger publisher Titan Books, and they will follow through with this, and other rarities.

The product pages in several stores show Titan as the publisher for the Loomis books, with a release date estimated for January 2009.

Known books to be released:
Creative Illustration
Figure Drawing For All It's Worth
Drawing The Head and Hands
and
3-Dimensional Drawing (which is the revised version of Successful Drawing, which contains clarified points by Loomis)

As you can see from all the comments above, we are very grateful to you for posting these books. Thank you very much. Just over 30 years ago I was working as a poster and lettering artist, hoping to get into animation. My colleague had a couple of Loomis's books and I photocopied many pages and copied huge chunks of them in longhand! I've now had thirty years in the animation industry, so I must have gleaned some knowledge from these books. They should definately be reprinted.

I didn't actually know until today that his books are rare. The book that I have is actually not included on the books that we see above and it does not have a title on the cover. The cover is color orange and is hardcover. mice
