Andrew Loomis
Andrew Loomis wrote some of the best art instruction books ever, however as you may know, they are no longer in print and nearly impossible to find. SaveLoomis.org is a great resource, with html versions of all six of his books. Pdf versions of the books used to be available, but have become very hard to locate. I was fortunate enough to secure pdf versions of all six books and have since put them on my server for others to download and learn from. To my knowledge all of these books, which were published between 1939-'61, are in the public domain and thus are free to distribute.
To download a .rar file containing all six books click here, otherwise click the image of the book you are interested in.

Also i am interested what do you think about barrington barber fundamental of drawing and if you maybe have it.
Thanks so much for making this available. All who download it, like me, will appreciate it very much.
I have put a reference to this site in two of my posts which referred to other sites which had carried these books

Thank you so much for sharing these!

Thanks again!
they will be very useful.
Thank you,

I am always looking for 'old' books on art and when I do find them, I am in awe at the writing and printing skills of those past years.
Thank you very much for taking the time and using your skills in making these gems available.
Now I have to ensure that I don't lose them from my hard drive!
Thanks again.
I had acquired 5 out of the 6 already, so I finally have the one I was missing. Merci!
A gift of inestimable value for every sincere artist, both professional or neophyte.
Andrew Loomis deserve to be remember like the Leonardo of illustration.
I am returning to drawing/sketching after a long
absence and these books are an invaluable help.
Much appreciated.

I don't have a site but you can find my art in the conceptart.org forums. Search for Q-Caddlewick.
these up!
Thanks!
THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH FOR YOUR BIG HEART
I AM REALLY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION IN MY LEARNING -THANKS TO ALL YOUR GREAT WORK
i've been looking for loomis book everywhere
thank you very much for sharing.
cheers.
labour of altruism is truly remarkable. Even Walter-Foster sells two 32pg versions of Faces, and Figures, selling for $8.95 each. I for one didn't even know about Andrew Loomis until I happened upon your site. You have brought his love, his unique mastery of art to me in a way I would never would have known were it not for your efforts. Thank-you.
download! Even when people don't take the extra
time to convey their thanks, rest easy knowing
that you're making the world a more artistic
place with every download. The knowledge you
share will result in Art, and that's a wonderous
thing. Happy Holidays and Blessed Be.
Thanks again,
Merry X-mas

I took the time to upload these to Mediafire and distribute it around so people would give your bandwidth a break :-)

If you're wondering about the huge traffic it maybe due to the fact that this link has been posted on 4chan. And there's a huge amount of untalented wannabe artists there, like me.
Have you considered adding a paypal donation button to help pay for the bandwidth. I'd be willing to donate a couple of bucks for the cause.
Thanks again!
Dave
I just hope they also end on some project Guthenbeg site or free of copyright database.
Keep fighting onward, it's worth it. The animation mentor stuff sounds great, I like that people from all over the world can do it. Good for them. Physical film schools are just not what so many people need, or don't need at the time, especially considering the cost.
Thanks for the inspiration...

P.S. Do you know of any other good online resources for artists ? My focus is on digital art at the moment....
I'm a big fan of CGTalk and also ConceptArt.org, but there are tons of sites out there that are incredibly helpful for growing your digital art skills.
Also, Gnomon has some great DVD tutorials with topics ranging everywhere from drawing to 3d. Keep at it!
Regards!
Again, thank you! :o)
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful books. I'm very grateful for your generosity allowing me and others to download all of these books.

(P.S. It was tough to leave a comment because it kept saying my email address is invalid!)
Again, thanks!!
it's nice to see them all on one page.
andrew loomis books are some of the best for anatomy, and all of the old sites with them up are down and i can't find hard copies anywhere!
thank you sooo much, this is so awesome!! :)
Thank you so much - these books are a treasure and you will probably never know how far reaching of an impact your decision to put them will have!

must be not only a dedicated artist, but a very good person.
Thank you again.

You've probably gotten the sense that folks really do appreciate your generous gift. Even then, many, many thanks for keeping this great information alive and in motion.
I wish there was some way to bully the Loomis estate to reprint these. Collectors are snapping up all the hardbound copies and the last editions in paperback are falling apart from over use.
I have always used Loomis as instructional text, as they are much better than Byrne Hogarth's works, which while instructional is so artificial.

You are Ryan?
Thank you so much!

P.S. I have a Copy of Figure Drawing for all it's Worth.My Mom gave it to me when I was 14.Now I'm 47.and it's still a treasure.
may I pass your site on to others? I'm a regular over on Penciljack.com
Betty - I'm sorry, please try downloading it again, I haven't heard of anyone else having problems opening the pdfs.
making these books available to everyone. The
world of art instruction needs generous people
like you to off set the terrible teaching methods \
that many of our universities and colleges endorce.
I would also like to recommend that everyone read
Anthony J Ryder's book on figure drawing it
changed my life. Once again, thank you for making
these books available.
which i can learn to draw from classic tutorials.
You rock!
He surely is one of the best figure drawing teachers!
I am a Japanese Illustrator.
My nickname is mogurin.
I studied illustration by Andrew Loomis's books when I was young, which was tlanslated into Japanese, and was very influenced .
I read "Creative Illustration" and" Drawing the Head& Hands" &
"Figure drawing for all it'worth".
These three books were tlanslated into Japanese by Maar Sha Co., Ltd. in Japan.
But when I skimed pdf now, some illustration were omitted in Japanese books, that surprised me.
And what's more,I found another Andrew Loomis's book,
"Fun With A Pencil","Successful Drawing","The Eye Of The Painter"!
In Japan ,we can get only" Drawing The Head & Hands" & "igure Drawing For All It's Worth".
Regrettably" Creative Illustration" is out of print in Japan, although it is a great book.
So ,thank you very much.I am grateful for you.
If you permit me to translate into Japanese, I would like to
put into our language little by little in my mixi homepage.
With the help of your books I am doing better in the art field than before...
Thanks again...
I am very much glad to have your successful art books....
Switzerland calling :) Thanks a million for the books. I was trawling through the bookworld looking for them and accidently found your site.
So here they are, nestling on my hard drive, awaiting my brain to stop wrestling with my hand and just pick up the pencil and DRAW!
Hey, all the best with the super ninja animation dream!
Cheers mate...
You are a hero!!
I just wanted to express my thanks to you for putting the Andrew Loomis books up for downloading. They are going to be a great help to further my easel painting. I wanted to know, if you know where I could get ahold of a copy of The Famous Artist School Illustration books from the sixties, or any other time period for that matter? Thanks again for your help. Sincerely, Michael Calles
Best regards
I'm wondering, did he do a Figures in 3d space book as well?
Thanks, and good luck with the animation ninja training!
India .. just ping me on that email... Let me
treat with a beer...
(Hello and Thank You Very Much)
for your generosity in posting these books. They're a tremendous help for this fledgling illustrator.
Thanks so much for the Loomis downloads. I have a couple in hard copies, but as you know they're gone perhaps forever except monstrously jacked up prices on what's available, all thanks, as I understand, to the greed of his kids squabbling over his estate. And as far as I'm concerned he's a god and true descendant of Howard Pyle. No one is teaching this anymore. You're performing a good service. Carry on, Art Soldier!
FYI I bought The Animator's Survival kit on Amazon through your site so you might let them know you're an asset. I'll also check out Animation Mentor on your say so.

Andrew Loomis. I knew nothing about him until I read
a tutorial on figure drawing by Ron Lemen - he
recommended some self initiated research on Loomis.
Magically, this site was the first site i clicked on out of the 148,000 other links I could have
cliked on hahaha :)
Thanks a lot for uploading these, its very sweet
of you! :)
Good luck with your animation studies :]

Thanks so very much for making these books available. I "discovered" Andrew Loomis when I was a little girl, but was limited to just savoring them in the library and occasionally photocopying the few pages I could afford to then, because they were treated as reference books and couldn't be checked out. In years since, I discovered other people wanted his books as much as I did, and could never find affordable copies!
I wrote Walter Foster publications a letter today, asking them to consider re-releasing Mr. Loomis' work in its entirety, instead of the excerpts they've released under different titles. (I encourage others to do so, via their publishing/sales department). Research is showing that Loomis' family ultimately still controls the rights and wants nothing to do with it, other than leaving it for educational copying. I'm not sure if that's true, since Walter Foster is publishing something from the books. But at least we have these to be able to print out and study.
Thank you for this treasure you've provided for artists and budding artists everywhere, the ease of download and the donation of bandwidth as well. It's awesome that you've done this... a real public service.
May years of happiness and success come to you in your animation ninja quest. Hope to see some of your works in the near future!
On Ken Steacy Publishing's site, I just discovered... he was going to be re-releasing at least 4 of Loomis's books. Ken Steacy Publishing is now partnering up with a larger publisher Titan Books, and they will follow through with this, and other rarities.
The product pages in several stores show Titan as the publisher for the Loomis books, with a release date estimated for January 2009.
Known books to be released:
Creative Illustration
Figure Drawing For All It's Worth
Drawing The Head and Hands
and
3-Dimensional Drawing (which is the revised version of Successful Drawing, which contains clarified points by Loomis)
Simply, it was unblievable to have it all. I hope
all of us do our best to respect them.
Thank you so much for sharing these!
